| The Bethesdan Choir motto “Catch the Spirit” emerges from the choir as it delivers a message through song that will truly lift up the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
The Bethesdan Choir was founded in April, 1975 by Dr. A. Lincoln James, Sr., pastor emeritus of Greater Bethesda Baptist Church. The establishment of this group was a strategy used by the pastor to cultivate the re-involvement of young adults in the church’s programs and to formulate a choir that placed particular emphasis on both traditional and contemporary gospel music. At the helm of this spectacular group is the renowned musician and director, Mr. Kenneth Woods, Jr. The choir membership has historically consisted of talented vocalists, ranging from ages 17 years and above. Since its humble beginning, the Bethesdan choir has ministered to various church congregations and other religious affiliations in the community and Chicagoland area. The group has offered a musical message that has proven to be both inspirational and “soul stirring” in every respect. In 2004, Kenneth Woods and the Bethesdan Choir expanded their performance venue to the Goodman Theater opening for Regina Taylor's production of Crowns. In 2005, they returned to the Goodman for a pre-performance concert for Ossie Davis' Purlie. The Bethesdans are blessed with a fine musical repertoire of both contemporary and traditional gospel music, coupled with various arrangements of spirituals. Added to this melodious sound is some perfectly divine choralography, making this dynamic group one that desires to be heard. On August 10, 2009 the Choir celebrated "Thirty-Three Years" in which it made its outstanding success of the Annual “Sermon In Song” presentation. This has enabled the group to minister to various church congregations and other religious organizations.
